rationale

manufacturing and the FoF PPP

Manufacturing is still widely recognised as the driving force of the European Economy. Manufacturing activity in Europe provides about 20% of all jobs (more than 30 million persons) in 25 different industrial sectors and over 2 million companies, largely dominated by SMEs, and an estimated further 60 million employees in related service areas. The turnover in 2010 was approximately EUR 6,400 billion with a value added of more than EUR 1,500 billion.

The Factories of the Future Public-Private Partnership (FoF PPP) was one of three PPPs launched by the European Commission in 2008 to tackle directly the impending economic crisis and help EU manufacturers, in particular SMEs, to adapt to global competition and meet with increased success global consumer demands for greener, more customised and higher-quality products through advanced R&D and Technology Innovation activities in Nanoscience, Nanotechnologies, Materials, new Production Technologies and connected ICT applications. The global middle class, in fact, is expected to grow by more than one billion people by 2020, so that, by that time, the global value added for manufactured goods market will increase by more than 50%, representing a major opportunity for the European industry, which is recognised as leader in many market segments thanks to an historical culture and long tradition in design and manufacturing of high value products.

152 projects have been or are being carried out under FP7 in the context of the FoF PPP Initiative, following a dedicated multi-annual Roadmap. The success of the PPPs, with the committed engagement by small and large industry actors and a substantial number of built demonstrators and pilot and filed patent applications, is unquestionable. The Initiative was hence confirmed and renewed under Horizon 2020, and additional projects are already underway. Nevertheless, there is scope for better dissemination, exploitation and transfer of project results within and beyond the individual projects lifecycles. Fast and effective research results exploitation through innovation based on nanotechnologies, novel materials, advanced production technologies and ICT applications, represents a key enabler to grow above average in the emerging markets and also to recapture market shares in established markets where consumers look for more functionality, comfort and sustainability of products coupled with customisation, personalisation and innovative product-services.

where EFFECTIVE comes in

The aim of the EFFECTIVE project is to address the dissemination, exploitation and transfer of technologies resulting from FoF PPP projects in order to make sure that projects have the expected impacts, by integrating their activities into the innovation processes of relevant manufacturing industries through a human-centric and design-based approach. That is, projecting back from the market and consumers’ needs and expectations to the new products and processes that address them through the enabling technologies resulting from FoF PPP projects activities and results.
